It is fortunate that Adela kept a journal about her extremely busy pioneering life. She wrote about her experiences of building and living in Athenree Homestead, her work in the kitchen, the cultivation of her garden, growing vegetables, flowers and young trees. Also the hosting of important visitors and the training of house staff.

Adela returned to New Zealand from England in 1910 to be present at the publication of her book - My Simple Life.

This occasion was held in Katikati but sadly Adela, who was quite unwell at the time, passed away that evening.
